NEW YORK - Drug developer AstraZeneca Plc. said late Thursday the Food and Drug Administration approved Nexium for use in treating Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, a rare disorder.
Nexium, a proton pump inhibitor, is already approved to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults and children between the ages of 12 and 17. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, or ZES, causes tumors in the pancreas and duodenum and ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.
The disease affects fewer than three out of every million Americans.
American depository shares of AstraZeneca rose $1.20, or 2 percent, to close at $62.33 on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has traded between $43.92 and $65.52 over the last 52 weeks.
